getting physical
Yes I really did it this weekend! Both days I went out on the bike and cycled for a bit. I did decide not to start too wild. Both days were 45 minute trips about 10 km. And I made sure I had the windy bit first, at least I did on saturday. After a couple of really nice days it was a lot colder again this weekend.
Saturday I started on the dyke to Gouderak. Not as comfortable as I would have liked, no cyclepath and lots of cars. I wasn't sure how to get over the Gouwe here. If there would be a bridge. Nope no bridge but a small ferry. What a nice experience. There was room enough for two cars and a couple of cyclists or pedestrians. The cars had to turn first on a small stretch of road and the go backwards onto the small ferry. I was very glad I was not there by car. Luckily I did have some money on me. Not very expensive though. And then along the other side of the water over a cyclepath this time back to Gouda. This was nicer as there was a cyclepath and I had the wind at my back now. It is the drawback of the flat polder land I live in, the wind can really get to you.
On sunday after lunch it was time for another tour. This time in the direction of Reeuwijk. There are very beautifull lakes there. [Next time I will take my own camera and take plenty of pics] It had been such a long time since I had been there by bike that it took me a little while to find the right route. But to cycle amongst the 'plassen' lakes is very beautifull. Nice small bridges that open easily for sailboats and rowboats. It was the first weekend those were out in droves as well. I had no idea were I was at some point but knew that if I kept going right, right, right, I had to end up back in Gouda at some point. I did enjoy myself, despite not having got the wind as right as I did yesterday and having it on the last leg. Sometimes you forget how beautifull your own country is. Going to countries all over the world to gawk and there is so much beauty on my own doorstep. The westen part of this country is densely populated. And yet Gouda is in the middle of the 'green heart'. This means narrow roads often surrounded by water on both sides. Imagine british country lanes with the hedges and then remove the hedges and insert water. A lot of people who didn't grow up in this part of the country are afraid to drive a car on these roads because of the water. I have always loved it. And yet when I am on my bike I do prefer the smaller roads without cars. Loads of people tend to drive too fast here. I really hope I am going to keep this up.
Great message in the paper today. Research has shown that reading is very relaxing, even more relaxing then listening to music for example. Yeah! I can use my reading as a relaxation excersise. :)
