weekend in Limburg

Had a very nice weekend break in Limburg with some friends and Nina the dog. We went to attend the Elf fantasy fair in Arcen. It 's the second year it's been held in Arcen as well, before it only used to be in April in Haarzuilen.
We arrived at the cottage Friday evening, rented in Landal green parc Roekenbosch
which was close to Arcen. It is indeed a very nice location. The castle gardens are well worth a visit even when there is no festival going on, I can really recommend them. The reason that we went all this way were the lectures of Prof. Rotherham. This time the lecture was on woodland creatures. Very entertaining as always and learned some new things as well. Then for a few hours we wandered around the terrain, taking in the beautifull surroundings and of course admiring all the beautifull costumes. Some people come up with something new and wonderful for every fair, and by now there are a few around the year in the Netherlands. The grounds were so large that we barely had time to stroll through them before it was time to meet up with Roly for tea. It is a much cherisched tradition. And after that it was time for the cookery show. We had heard so much about it through the years and now finally it was coming to Holland. It is a show about dishes from history put together by Roly and chef Simon Smith. If you live in England do try to go and see it. Of course there was a lot of British humour involved and soon we were in tears from laughing so much. So a very good day indeed.

Sunday we slept late and of course snugled with Nina in my case. She remains an adorable darling. Went for a game of midget golf in which I came in s
econd out of four people playing, not bad. Had pancakes for lunch and then headed out of the parc. We decided to stop in Overloon to visit Liberty parc. The WW II museum is huge. And we only had time to see part of it. They really have a lot of vehicles from WW II and some very nice exhibits. What made it extra special was that this weekend was the anniversary of Market Garden and some of the veterans were visiting this museum. Seeing them in uniform with all those medals knowing that they were here so long ago to help liberate us. Well it never stops feeling special. A tour of the museum would not be complete if afterwards we did not stop at the Overloon war cemetary. Very similar in style to the one I saw a few months ago in Bayeux. Smaller, thankfully, but equally moving.
